Since January 1, 2021, Dr. Malika Meddahi has served as the Deputy Director for the Accelerators and Technology Sector at CERN. Her scientific career began at CERN as a student, and she obtained her Ph.D. in Physics in 1991, specializing in particle accelerators. Following this, she worked for two years in the U.S. as a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
In 1994, she returned to CERN and has since worked as a particle accelerator physicist, focusing on improving beam performance across various accelerators. She has supervised post-doctoral fellows, taught at the CERN Accelerator School on Accelerator Beam Transfer Physics, co-taught at the U.S. Particle Accelerator Schools on transverse beam dynamics, and co-taught a Project Management class at CERN.
More recently, she has taken on Project Leader roles, including overseeing the LHC Injectors Upgrade Project (LIU), a major ten-year initiative to renovate the CERN accelerators chain in preparation for future high-brightness particle beams.
Beyond her scientific work, Dr. Meddahi has been involved in various organizational roles. She has served as President of the CERN Joint Advisory Disciplinary Board, President of the Joint Advisory Rehabilitation and Disability Board, President of the CERN Joint Advisory Appeals Board, and acted as a mediator in workplace conflicts. She was also a member of the Nine Senior Staff Advisory Committee, which facilitates communication between Senior Staff and the Director-General, serving as Chairperson during the final year of her mandate.
