He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Twente in 1976, followed by an M.Sc. degree in Applied Physics and Superconductivity. He earned his Ph.D. degree for his thesis research on "Superconducting Rectifiers" in 1985, the same year he became an assistant professor at the University of Twente. In 1996, he accepted an appointment at CERN, where he worked as a staff member of the Physics Department and became the ATLAS Magnet Systems Project Leader. He later participated in several development projects and led numerous Ph.D. theses.
